photoshop is a very powerful tool, and is helpful in many different situations. one of my favorite things to use it for is to.. enhance photos of my co-workers. this is the result of my latest work, which this ignitable has been based around. by the end of this ignitable you should have a basic understanding of some of the techniques used in photoshop. start by opening the original. what a bunch of smart looking fellas. lets embarrass them! toggling the "quick mask" mode is one of the easiest ways to make a selection around certain edges within a photo. when "quick mask" is on, areas that appear with a red tint are deselected, and areas without any tint are selected. when using the "quick mask" it is a good idea to use black and white as the foreground and background colors. when drawing black on a selected area, it becomes deselected. inversely, drawing white on a deselected area selects it. by default, everything is selected. with black selected as the foreground color, click the paint bucket. click anywhere on the image to deselect everything. another method of selection is to use the eraser tool to erase a deselected area, essentially this is the same as the method described earlier. in photoshop, there are many different ways to do the same thing, it comes down to using the technique that is most comfortable to you. here, i do a rough selection of the general area around the subjects. it will be detailed out after the rough selection is complete. this saves some time and works as guide during the detailed selection. continue until all the subjects are selected. obviously this can take a little time and patience. now we are ready to move on to a more detailed selection. the detailed selection requires alot of patience, and a very steady hand. start by getting a fairly close view of the subjects. once you're up close enough to clearly see the edges, select the brush tool and begin going from the outside towards the subject. it is suggested that you make short movements, because if you mess up, ctrl+z will undo your mistake. however if you are using very long movements, you will have to start over from the beginning of that motion. working from the top down is suggested, since a pulling motion gives you more control over your mouse. once everything is selected, its time to bring the selection over to the new... environment. select the "standard mode" icon to change the mask into a selection. goto edit, and then cut (or copy) if you selected cut, you should see the subjects disappear from the original. now lets open the file for the environment. now... this isn't any sort of passive aggressive message to any of my co-workers, it is just something that fits the overall vision. goto edit, and then paste to send your co-workers strait to hell! ok, so we don't want anyone standing in lava, so lets extend the ground upward a little bit to give some more foot room. again, there are many ways to do the same thing in photoshop, it is encouraged that you experiment until you find the techniques you are most comfortable with. select the background layer select everything (this can be done with ctrl+a as well) nudge the background up until the person standing in back isn't worried about melting. now select the paint bucket and fill in the white area at the bottom with black. lets get everyone standing close so we can position them exactly where we want them. select the guy on the far left. once he is selected, nudge him to the right a little now lets select everyone and move them all over to the right, to get a better framing effect between the volcano and the comet. the guy in the far right was standing in a bush in the original, so i cut around it leaving a big gap in his leg. lets fix it. start by getting a closer view. once you can see the problem better, select the good side of the pant leg and copy it to a new layer. with this new layer, flip it horizontally select the "free transform" tool (note that you can also use ctrl+t) and put this new part where it looks like it should go now get rid of some of the pieces you don't need using the eraser tool. go through your image and spot little flaws that could effect the final product and fix them. ok, so these guys don't look like they are standing on a platform at the gates of hell yet. lets make them look a little bit more realistic. what we're going to do, is apply some shadows and color burns to make them seem shaded. but first lets make some color adjustments. select image, then adjustments, then brightness and contrast. adjust the brightness to whatever makes your co workers look like they are actually standing on the edge of a sea of lava. now select image, then adjustments, then color balance. again, adjust the colors to make it look more realistic. now lets apply some color burns to give a darker shadow. it is a good idea to make long strokes here, since lots of little strokes cannot always be undone if it goes past the level of history photoshop has been set to keep track of. now lets get rid of any hard edges. select the blur tool and go around the edges of your co-workers. now its time to put on all the cool costumes and gear required to both fight demons and rock and roll. (don't count out the 12 minute improv drum solo.) locate a file with something you wish to incorporate. this looks pretty sweet! i'm sure demons tremble at the meer thought of this. lets use it. select the white background and the shadow. select the inverse option from the selection menu. (you can also use shift + ctrl + i). copy it to your clipboard (ctrl + c or edit, copy) and paste it into your main graphic (ctrl + p or edit, paste) transform it (scale and rotate) to where you want it. and put it behind the subject carrying it. position it to the exact point you want it, and make any other transformations. continue the process until everyone has something cool to wield (like long flowing locks of demon repelling rock and roll hair-band goodness, or just a killer snake necklace). <br/>", "overdue_email_after": false, "fail_retake": false, "keywords": "Photoshop", "fail_action": "", "notification_email": false, "access_token_redemption_count": 0, "completion_type": "", "title": "Photoshopping Your Colleagues", "overdue_email_after_text": null, "encoded_id": "eJNFRdM5sH", "is_viewed": true, "overdue_days_email": false, "parent_id": null, "private_views": 0, "fail_email_text": null, "status": "active", "sharing": "public", "description": "This ignitable will show you how to take a seemingly innocent staff photo, and turn them into a heavy metal rock band.", "tags": [84], "price": "0.00", "invite_message": null, "allow_score_reset": true, "igtype": "ignitable", "pass_email_text": null, "fail_popup_text": null, "podcast": false, "public_views": 9657, "notification_email_text": null, "categories": [], "overdue_days_email_text": null, "pass_action": "", "notification_days_before": null, "access_token": null, "pass_popup_text": null, "pass_level": 0, "author": 17, "completion_date": null, "overdue_summary": false, "fail_retake_auto": false, "avgrating": "5.0", "directory": "116_1195271782616", "date_created": "2007-11-16T22:56:22Z", "access_token_limit": 0}, "model": "Content.ignitable", "pk": 116}]
